Woollen Ribbed Headband

Woollen Ribbed Headband

Had a sudden craving to use up some wool yarn so I started a ribbed headband. I thought about making knit-look swatches with it, but this yarn doesn't provide the best visibility. I'll get to that another day.

When I pick up tomorrow, I'll either work more ribbing or finish up the last row and seam the work.

Okay, I finished the headband — didn't think I would — and no notes, I can think of. Fits perfectly, works wonderfully.

I did work more ribbing. I was unsure I would because of the amount of remaining yarn, but I tried it and didn't have to unravel. There was enough to work an additional row so the front of the row had five knit-look rows, and then work a row of slip stitches back to create symmetry with the first row.

I finished with only a few inches of yarn remaining. While this was perfect, as I'd been trying to think of a one-skein project anyway, I didn't think it was enough to seal up the end and complete the work.

I went forward anyway, thinking there was at least enough to start the process and then I could find some black worsted yarn to finish it. I started by folding the two ends toward each other while keeping the previous front of the work as the outside. I then fed the finishing tail down the left end and back up the right.

After I pulled the tail tight, deciding on the height I wanted for the center, my initial plan was to do a single zigzag just so I could use it for the nap I was preparing to take.

With how much was left, I realised I could probably do a bit better. I ended up being able to seam the whole project, working back and forth between each row, and weaving in my ends.

The headband was well-functioning, kept me warm during my nap(s), and didn't fall off in my sleep.

Below, is a picture of the yarn that remains from the skein.

There're fewer than two inches in total. For some, this isn't sufficient for weaving in, but I'm happy with it. This yarn is also 100% wool and will begin felting on its own anyway, further securing the ends. I can always go back in with another yarm for the seam if I so choose.

Also note, this work was for what would be a large – extra large headband so this is representative of the shortest tails you should have remaining, generally speaking.

I'll eventually come back and pattern out the usual four sizes.
