ReCrocheting an Adornment for Your Hair

ReCrocheting an Adornment for Your Hair

I'm preparing a little guide for an item I've been asked about a few times, so I re-made it this morning. I actually started circa 13:38 the 17th, but most of the work was from around 01:49 to about 10:28:16 this morning, the 18th.

Guide

I'm not sure this will qualify as a pattern, but it will give you the information you need to create this item, hence "guide".

The original scrunchie had no issue stretching, but the one I've just made — despite using the same procedure — does. The original comfortably stretches to a circle of approx. 5" or 12.5 cm in diameter. The brown more comfortably stretches to about 3.5" or 8.75 cm. I'm not sure what has caused the change, but note this is something you may experience too. I'm still able to fit the brown once over a bun of over 4" or 10 cm in diameter.

Overview

Work in one direction, re-attach and work in the other direction, seam tube together around hair tie, work edging on one side, re-attach and work edging on the other side.

Materials

Yarn: Soft & Shiny, Loops & Threads
Hook: 3.5 mm
Hair tie: Cotton-Nylon approx. 2.5" or 6.125 cm diameter

Instructions

Chain 50 and join.

Chain 50

Chain 3 and turn. Work double crochets into each stitch (50 stitches). Slip stitch to join.

Chain 3. Work 2 double crochets into each stitch (100 stitches). Slip stitch to join.

Chain 3. Work 2 double crochets into each stitch (200 stitches). Slip stitch to join.

Cut and re-attach at the center. I do this by forming a magic knot with the tail. With the stitches right-side up, pull up a loop from between the chain and last stitch of the first round. Chain 3. Work double crochets through the back bumps of each stitch, starting opposite the last stitch of the first double crochet round worked in the other direction (50 stitches). Slip stitch to join the round.

Chain 3. Work 2 double crochets into each stitch (100 stitches). Slip stitch to join.

Chain 3. Work 2 double crochets into each stitch (200 stitches). Slip stitch to join.

Fold the work together so all stitches are outward facing.

From this point forward, there are a few techniques that may not be intuitive or as easily understood through picture and text. I've filmed short demonstrations of these steps. I'll still list what follows here, and you can use the video to follow along.

  • Feed your tube through the middle of the hair tie.
  • Remove your hook and pull the loop through the other side of the work. Pull the loop between the chain and the last stitch of the round.
  • Slip stitch through both sides to seam the tube together around the hair tie. The stitches should line up with each other, i.e. the first stitch of the side facing you should be seamed with the last stitch of the last round on the back side. Slip stitch to join the round.
  • Chain 2. Make 2 double crochets in the first stitch. Single crochet in the next stitch. Chain 3 and skip 1. Single crochet in the following stitch. *Make 3 double crochets in the next stitch. Single crochet in the next stitch. Chain 3 and skip 1. Single crochet in the following stitch.* Continue the asterisk section until the end. Make another double crochet into the first stitch to complete the mini shell we started at the beginning. Slip stitch to join.
  • Chain 1. Single crochet in the first stitch. Chain 3 and single crochet into the following chain space. *Chain 3 and single crochet into the middle double crochet of the next shell. Chain 3 and single crochet into the following chain space.* Continue the asterisk section until the end. Chain 3 and slip stitch into the starting single crochet to join.
  • Chain 3. Make 2 double crochets in the first stitch. Single crochet in the first chain space. Chain 3 and single crochet into the following chain space. *Make 3 double crochets in the next single crochet. Single crochet in the next chain space. Chain 3 and single crochet into the following chain space.* Continue the asterisk section until the end. Make another double crochet into the first stitch to complete the mini shell we started at the beginning. Slip stitch to join.
  • Chain 1. Single crochet in the first stitch. Make 3 double crochets into the following chain space (skip the remaining double crochet of the shell). Form a chain-3 picot (chain 3, slip stitch into the back bump of the first chain). Add 3 more double crochets to the chain space. *Single crochet into the middle double crochet of the next mini shell. Make 3 double crochets into the following chain space. Form a chain-3 picot. Add 3 more double crochets to the chain space.* Slip stitch to join. Fasten off.
  • Re-attach yarn on the other side in the last stitch of the third round (the round with 200 stitches). From here, you are repeating what you did on the first side, with the exception of the final round. The following is just a restatement of the steps in case that's helpful.
  • Chain 2. Make 2 double crochets in the first stitch (the same stitch you attached the yarn to).
  • Fasten off and weave in your ends.

I do hope this helps. :).
