Misc. Notes

  • Much of reasoning and comprehension rely on giving consideration to precision
    • When facing difficulty, honouring precision will allow you to identify exactly in which areas you are challenged, in which areas you excel, and how to optimise the skills and areas in which you excel to compensate or continue developing
      • It behooves you to be honest and precise about where you have difficulty and why. "Lazy" is imprecise and frequently inaccurate. Most derogatory terms used to describe cognitive ability, academic performance, mental performance, etc. are imprecise and provide little of the information needed for progress. Avoiding these terms and searching for precision may be a preliminary or fundamental reasoning exercise.
  • Low confidence undermines pattern recognition, reasoning, mental reasoning, and recall. Low confidence undermines skill application to new domains.
    • Need to develop comfort with guessing, being wrong, and moving on quickly to attempt next guess; interpolation; need to accept you are ever-improving ie. you begin with inaccuracy; inaccurate attempts do not logically equate to you cannot come to know the right answer
    • Need consistent, rapid feedback on mistakes to strengthen skills and learn ie. be wrong often and be happy to learn when you are; your mind needs training; it will not be trained if you stop
    • Challenge to student's low self-confidence
      • What do you think is the consequence to getting something wrong?
      • What do you think of having to change or improve? I'm insufficient, I'm not good enough thus I need to change to become so or I'm perpetually in motion, I'm ever-improving thus any need for change falls under optimal functioning— this is how it's meant to be.
        • The growth of humans is infinite. You will not begin at your end state because you do not have one. Acceptance will aid you.

An academic system that demands critical thinking and pattern recognition for advancement while simultaneously attacking self-confidence, self-concept, and self-esteem is inherently self-defeating.
