A Coaster

A Coaster

I thought I'd make something beautiful just because.

The inspiration below:

Scanned image of a book page with a crochet diagram for a coaster and placemat

Besides taking in the stitches, I immediately noticed the center seam. This would have to be moved (for my taste). The seam will be disguised in a corner.

Process:

Magic loop. Chain 3.
Double crochet 3, chain 3, dc 3, ch 3, dc 3, ch 3, dc 3, ch 1, dc into top of first stitch.
Chain 3. Dc 2 in corner space, dc 1 in each side st, {dc 2, ch 3, dc 2} in corner, dc 1 in each side st, {dc 2, ch 3, dc 2} in corner, dc 1 in each side st, {dc 2, ch 3, dc 2} in corner, dc 1 in each side st, {dc 2, ch 1, dc into top of first stitch} in corner.
Create two more rounds in a similar manner.
Chain 3. Dc 1 in corner space, {dc in first side st, ch 1 skip 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ...} until corner, {dc 1, ch 5, dc 1} in corner, {dc in first side st, ch 1 skip 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ...} until corner, {dc 1, ch 5, dc 1} in corner, {dc in first side st, ch 1 skip 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ...} until corner, {dc 1, ch 5, dc 1} in corner, {dc in first side st, ch 1 skip 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ...} until corner, {dc 1, ch 2, extended dc into top of first stitch} in corner.
Chain 1. Single crochet 3 in corner space, sc 1 in each side st, sc 6 in corner, sc 1 in each side st, sc 6 in corner, sc 1 in each side st, sc 6 in corner, sc 1 in each side st, sc 3 in corner, sl st to join.
Chain 1. Twisted single crochet 2 in first stitch, twisted sc 1 in next 22 st, twisted sc 2 in next stitch, twisted sc 1 in next 22 st, twisted sc 2 in next stitch, twisted sc 1 in next 22 st, twisted sc 2 in next stitch, twisted sc 1 in next 22 st, fasten off and weave in your ends.

Notes:

My last three rounds differ from the image in a few ways.

  • On the fifth round, the corners have a ch 5 instead of the usual ch 3. I did this to make up for the change in the number of double crochets in the corner. The diagram shows a ch 3 regardless of this.
  • The sixth round comprised of single crochets has 6 stitches in the corners. The diagram shows 5 stitches in the corners. Either works so long as it fills in the chain space.
  • The seventh row uses twisted single crochet. This produces a left-leaning twist. The image shows right-leaning. I've previously made the stitch that produces a right-leaning twist, but I couldn't remember how during this sitting, so left-leaning it was. The diagram also does not include an increase in this round. I felt it necessary to round my corners. Either works.
